In the age of social media, sharing photos has become second nature to all of us. However, this is precisely why respecting client’s privacy as a photographer is so important. As a mama, I understand firsthand the desire to keep my babies safe. For this reason, I generally keep my children off social media as much as possible. There are very few photos of my kids on my public profile or my website, and that’s entirely intentional.
So when the families I photograph tell me they don’t want their children’s faces shared online, I completely get it. I respect this more than ever because I’ve made the same decision for my own family. Unfortunately, I have noticed that not all photographers feel the same way.
I often see photographers getting frustrated when clients don’t allow them to post images. In some cases, they have even gone as far as sharing photos in large photography groups with 20,000+ members. And to justify their actions they’ll say something like “somebody just has to see has to see how beautiful they turned out.” which is wrong in so many ways! Again this is why respecting client’s privacy as a photographer is so important, and choosing someone you can trust matters.
The thing is, no photo, no matter how beautiful it is, is worth breaking your client’s trust. As photographers, we are documenting real people’s lives, not just creating content for our portfolios and social media.
These are a few of the reasons I personally choose not to share my children online:
My contract includes clear options for how images can be used, and I always provide a model release. If my client does not want their photos posted, I DO NOT POST THEM. Simple as that.
2. I Find Creative Ways to Showcase My Work Without Faces
Although, some families prefer privacy, it doesn’t always mean their session can’t be shared. In these cases, I find artistic ways to tell their story while keeping their children’s faces off public platforms.
3. I Provide Private and Secure Galleries
My galleries are always password protected and only available via the clients portal. I use Sprout Studio.

At the end of the day, photography is about more than just taking pictures, its about trust. It’s about capturing people’s most precious memories while also respecting their boundaries. Because of this, I would rather lose out on a portfolio image than break that client-photographer relationship.
To the parents who choose privacy, you’re not alone. I see you, I respect you, and I will always honor your wishes.
Now I’d love to hear from you! What are your thoughts? Have you had similar experiences? If you have any other tips or insights, let’s chat in the comments.
xoxo Kayla
